Job Description

The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International and be responsible for the following:

  I. Position Description:

This is a non-personal services contract for a Music Director/Musician/Accompanist for Catholic Mass/Worship Services.

II. Scope of Responsibilities:

a. Musician will provide musical accompaniment for Catholic Masses and the associated rehearsals for the Catholic Community at McConnell Air Force Base working in coordination with the Wing Chaplain or designee and in cooperation with the Catholic Priest. The musician will be able to perform all necessary assigned tasks and will be qualified as stated in this job description. The musician will support all Catholic activities and functions as required by this job description.

b. The musician’s responsibilities include administrating the Catholic music program, leading, equipping, and accompanying a team, and leading a team of volunteer musicians, vocalists, and audio/visual technicians as requested, to deliver a comprehensive Catholic music program.

III. Qualifications:

The musician shall:

a. Have a minimum of two (2) years' experience playing music in a tradition comparable to a Catholic Mass/Worship service.

b. Be able to sight read music.

c. Be able to demonstrate skills and proficiency in playing piano (preferably and alternatively organ).

d. Be able to demonstrate knowledge of choral harmony.

e. Be able to demonstrate musical proficiency in order to accompany a volunteer cantor and/or choir for the express purpose of congregational singing of hymns, choruses and praise songs.

f. Demonstrate the ability to play a wide range of musical selections.

g. Be able to play hymns out of the chapel hymnal and the current Catholic Missalette.

h. Demonstrate a willingness to work with chapel staff personnel and program volunteers of all religious backgrounds and faith beliefs.

i. Demonstrate knowledge of Catholic teachings, customs and traditions.

J. Have an understanding of the order, function, and intent of the order of worship at Sunday worship and special services.

k. Not be required nor be expected to hold any religious beliefs of other faith groups, but shall maintain professionalism, discipline and respect when dealing with religious/spiritual beliefs outside their own personal views.

I. Demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak fluent English.

m. Provide a resume to support his/her qualification to fulfill these requirements.

n. Adhere to the direction of the Catholic Priest, and work in harmony with volunteers.

IV. Duties and Responsibilities:

The musician shall:

a. Provide services at the Base Chapel or an alternately prescribed location on McConnell Air Force Base.

b. Play and lead the music at the direction of the Catholic Priest for contracted Catholic Masses and services as requested.

c. Coordinate music support requirements for the Catholic programs with the Catholic Priest and assigned Chaplains.

d. Be present a minimum of 30 minutes prior to worship services to rehearse with choir, as well as coordinate any last-minute details with volunteers and assigned chaplains and be ready to start on time with the playing of the appropriate musical accompaniment for services.

e. Adapt performances and rehearsals to altered worship service content and adjusted times. It is understood that service times and content have the potential to change due to unforeseen sickness, weather, and base exercises.

J. Have custodial responsibility for musical supplies used for his/her work, such as songbooks, sheet music, etc. Upon request by chapel personnel all supplies shall be returned.

k. Assume responsibility for restoring the performance and rehearsal areas to a neat and orderly condition after each performance or rehearsal. All materials shall be displayed in a neat and orderly fashion. The musician shall not depart the area until materials are returned to their original position. 

I. Assume responsibility of conservation of energy (turning off all lights, equipment, etc.) before leaving any service, rehearsal or special event.

m. Assume responsibility for securing the facility in the event they are the last person utilizing the facility in conjunction with their programs. Musician shall be given a facility key for securing the chapel.

n. Perform at the following sessions under this contract: 52 weekly Mass/worship services on Sunday, and 52 weekly rehearsals. Up to 18 special events/services including associated rehearsals (e.g. holy day service performances, additional rehearsals, special events/activities, and funeral service performances) are permitted and may be required based on the needs of the Catholic community.

o. Must conduct themself in a professional and business-like manner and maintain a professional appearance.

p. The Wing Chaplain or designated Chapel representative will notify the musician when any base security initiatives are planned and give at least 24 hours' notice if possible. Scheduled services not accomplished due to base closure (weather, exercise or actual alert) or holidays and family days will be accomplished as soon as possible after reopening occurs.

q. Musician shall plan and coordinate music selections with the Catholic Priest no less than four days in advance and be provided with weekly song selection support from MMI every Monday weekly.

r. Musician shall select hymns and other musical selections and coordinate all music support requirements tailored to meet the worship and liturgical needs of the particular mass celebration.

V. Period of Performance:

a. The period of performance for this agreement for service period is up to five years.

VI. Hours of Operation:

a. Standard Duty Hours: Mass is currently scheduled Sunday at 0930. Rehearsal is currently scheduled Wednesday at 1800 but may be moved to accommodate the musician and/or volunteer schedules. Each service and rehearsal is one hour, and arrival and setup at least 30 minutes prior is also needed. Additional Masses are scheduled on Holy Days including Christmas, Easter Vigil, Tridium, Ash Wednesday, etc. With the exception of Easter Vigil these Masses are usually also approximately one hour.
